Session 1: Orientation and Introductions

Greeting every one...
first I am very happy that dr. Newberry came back to teach us again.

My name is Eman, I am international student. I am from Saudi Arabia. I am married and i have one daughter and waiting to other baby in first of December. I started my master last fall and now I have three classes left do done my master. This quarter is will be the harder one because I am working in my thesis and I have other research class and in the first of December i will have a new baby :)

In this session we need to select a topic that you know enough about to create a sample unit of instruction for. Relate your understanding of online learning and any experience you have in designing, developing and delivering online instruction.

I didn't design any real class or unit of e-learning in the past. In last quarter we created a online class as a homework and i like to use what i learned.

1-(syllabus)
2-(Power Point)
3- (word for the power point)
4- (Quiz)

I created a online course it was two week long(one class in week)
I will design the unit like what i learned from the chapter one:

Curriculum: Instructional technology program
Course: EDUC101 Blog Design
Lesson: Introduction blog
Topic" create a blog
Activity: creating a blog and posting the first post

Course Goal:
Develop students’ skills and make them able to create and design their own blogs.

Course Requirements
1- each student needs to create his/her own blogs.
2- each student needs to post his/her assignment before the due date.
3- each student needs to post comments to his/her classmates.

Course Content Characteristics:
My online class plan:
Content:
Is this course I will focus to make every student feel convertible by using new technology, which is create a bloge.
Instructor:
This course will be design by me; I will use my knowledge in online learning. I will create my own power point.
Student:
The students in this class are college freshmen they don’t have online learning experience specially with blogs.
The expected students will be in the course between 9 to 12 students.
The problem:
Some of the students don’t know how to deal with blogs.
The expected Time of the course:
This course will be 2 weeks long.
Course Goal:
Develop students’ skills and make them able to create their own blogs.
Communication method:
* I will use my website and email to contact with students.
* I will ask student to view my own power point download skype program to communicate with each other so that they can do their project with each other.

General plan:
In the first and second class I will ask them to create their own blogs to post their assignment in it. They can find the steps in my power point that i create it for this class, and some recommend blogs in the teacher website “my website”.
Each student must post their assignment every week and also they should but same thing he/she like to share with another students, that not related to the subject “that make student be more active in their blogs.

Explain what you would like to learn or accomplish in this class.
I want to learn in this course how to design a good quality course and use a new programs and tools to make the online course active and successful.

Process:

1. Listen to podcast.

I have listened to the podcast and I summarized to the following:
  • Online learning is the result of Distance Learning
  • the mail was the early type of distance learning.
  • In 1700's there are some students can not get education because of their time or distance. they used the mail to receive the handwriting.
  • "Television and radio were used in the United States and Australia to deliver instruction to students who lived at great distances from population centers and schools".
  • multimedia model is other model of distance learning, it was used by the British Open University system in the 1970’s.
  • Dr. Newberry took an online class from Northern Arizona University using a bulletin board system in 1987 or 88 that was before the Internet became widely available.
  • "In 1999 the National Center for Education statistics reported that distance education was common in many post secondary institutions and noted that the difference between distance learning and online learning was blurring. This same report found that 60% of institutions were using asynchronous Internet-based technologies to deliver some instruction. It would be difficult now to find one that doesn’t. "

2. Read Chapter 1 in the Horton Text

I ordered the text book and i am still waiting for it.
I did research about the book and i found some of pages in chapter one online at this link :)
becouse I dont have the book yet and i found this link today i read some of the pages and it was about the following :
explain what is e-learning design ?
explain what is instructional design?
also how we can design all units of e-learning and write our learning objectives.
I really like this book it have a many impotent information that can help us to design and develop any type of e-learning.
and I will update my first post when i have the book ;)
